Michigan Republicans held a debate last night among candidates to be their party’s
sacrificial lamb* nominee to run against Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow. And pseudo-candidate Peter Konetchy managed to brand himself idiot-of-the-day by saying that he supports limits on the number of Muslim immigrants.
“The Muslims are setting up their own little groups that don’t want to assimilate,” he said. “Right now, we’re at war with Islam.
This guy just might have forgotten that Michigan is home to America’s Muslim capital**, so that he has essentially announced that, if elected, he will refuse to represent a s. He might also have forgotten his party’s most recent president specifically stating that we are not at war with Islam. But then what can you expect from a guy who claims both that he supports the Constitution and that there is no separation of church and state?
Apparently Mr. Konetchy has never heard of the 14th Amendment. He neither knows that it is the basis for the incorporation of (most of, to date) the Bill of Rights to apply to the states*** nor understands the general concept of non-discrimination that is the basic principle of the amendment.
Fortunately he has about as much chance of winning the nomination as I do.
* She won 57% of the vote in 2006 and there’s no noticeable discontent with her among non-committed-Republicans. Only former U.S. Rep Pete Hoekstra can be considered a serious potential challenge to her, and last year he lost the Republican gubernatorial race to now-Governor Rick Snyder. On the upside, he may have only lost that because he split the conservative vote with AG Mike Cox.
** Or if you prefer, it’s Islamic capital (cue scary music accompanying inevitable story line about shari’a law coming to your town next!).
*** And he’s a pro-2nd Amendment guy! I wonder how he’d respond to the argument that McDonald v. Chicago was wrongly decided?
