Can Everybody Please Just Shut Up Already?

You’d think by now that Republican politicians would realize that downplaying rape by focusing on the resulting babies is a bad combination of stepping in shit and putting your foot in your mouth. But West Virginia State Delegate Brian Kurcaba apparently was holed up playing Mario Kart all by himself all through the 2012 campaign season, else he would have known what happened to Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock when they said things like this.

“Obviously rape is awful,”… “What is beautiful is the child that could come from this.”

Yes, strictly speaking, true. Being the product of rape does not make the child un-beautiful. It’s the implication that is ugly; that we can therefore force a rape victim to spend the next 9 months living daily with the physical consequence of being raped.

On the other hand, there’s no need to flat-out lie about what he said, as Raw Story did.

West Virginia Republican says rape can be ‘beautiful’ if it produces a child

No, no, for god’s sake, no. He did not say that. Even the Kurcabas, Akins, and Mourdocks of the world aren’t that disgusting.

Just wait until they start talking about how a woman can’t get pregnant if the rape is legitimate. There is endless crazy out there.

Yeah, but consider the source. I don’t suppose you have to be very nuanced or eloquent to get elected to the West Virginia state legislature. I imagine an open mike at the cafeteria could pick up all manner of cringe-worthy comments.

Some West Virginia counties have illiteracy rates above 35%.
